OVERSIGHT REPORT ON THE DEPT OF COMMUNITY SAFETY
JACO MULDER, MPL FREEDOM FRONT PLUS
24 NOVEMBER 2009
Madam Speaker
The report presented to the house states that Gauteng contributes more than 50% to South Africa`s crime and for the 2008/9 financial year, there was a marked increase on the levels of violent crime. It is further noted that Gauteng is amongst the provinces that still showed high levels of murder rates in the period under review.
MEC Mosunkutu, crime levels in this province is unacceptable high.
The fact that outcomes were not included in the department`s report and the key outputs not achieved during the year under review is of concern and should be rectified.
Speaker
Too many members of the SAPD have been involved in crime recently. This and the call on police to shoot to kill and the comment of Deputy Minister Fikile Mbalula saying that it is inevitable that civil people will die in crossfire with police is alarming. Members of the SAPD should be well trained and managed well by their superiors. We expect better than what we have.
The crime situation in South Africa and in this province is extraordinary and calls for more responsible extraordinary measures.
Thank you speaker
