MR. ABRIE OOSTHUIZEN
  1. Abrie Oosthuizen was born on 3 October 1950 in Wolmaransstad and grew up in Ashton in the Boland.

  2. He completed his high school education at Montague High School where he was captain of his school’s first rugby and athletics teams, as well as chairperson of the debating association.

  3. In 1976 at the age of 23 he became the town clerk of Paul Roux in the Free State.

  4. From 1981 onwards he was a businessman in Paul Roux where he had also been active in the community.

  5. In 1981 at the age of 29 he was elected as Mayor of Paul Roux, during which time he was also a member of the management of the NEFS (North-Eastern Free State) Regional Development Association.

  6. He was a member of the National Party until 1982 when he became one of the founding members of the Conservative Party.

  7. In 1989 he was elected as Parliamentary Member for the Smithfield constituency which at the time was viewed as one of the most important constituencies in the Free State.

  8. He was elected as leader of the Conservative Party in the Free State in 1992.

  9. In March 1994 he participated in the establishment of the Freedom Front and was appointed the leader of the party in the Free State.

  10. Since 27 April 1994 he has been a member of the Free State Legislature where he has served in various committees. He was chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee from 1994 to 2009. At present he is chairperson of the Agriculture Committee in the Free State Legislature.

  11. In 2001 he was appointed as National Chairperson of the Freedom Front Plus and became a member of the Executive Management and Chairperson of the Federal Council of the party.

  12. He has served as a member of his church’s consistory at various times.

  13. He plays tennis and enjoys spending time with his family.

  14. He is married to Karin Burger, a social worker.

  15. He has two sons, Arno and Pierre and a daughter Carli and one grandchild.
